Pencarrow Stud had a big influence on Saturday’s Group 1 $300,000 New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas with both the first and second placegetters out of Pencarrow Stud bred mares.

It was Platinum Witness (California Dane x Chartreuse) who emerged triumphant, thundering to victory in centre track. Trainer Lisa Latta has always held a high opinion of the filly and Saturday’s victory was vindication.

“She has always shown us a lot at home and that is why instead of winning a maiden race we kept racing in stakes company,” commented Latta. “It really showed that she is up to it.”

Platinum Witness’ dam Chartreuse was bred by Sir Peter Vela and Philip Vela and was sold at the 2005 Karaka Festival Sale by Grande Vue Lodge to Rogerson Bloodstock. Chartreuse proved a good racehorse, winning three times at Listed level.

The only foal to race so far out of Chartreuse is Platinum Witness who had also won the Listed Armadillo Stakes earlier in the season. The family has been in hot form lately with Chartreuse’s half-sister Zarnitsa (Maroof) the dam of six-time stakes winner Zennista (Zenno Rob Roy).

Finishing second in the race and giving Pencarrow Stud the quinella was Darci’s Dream (Darci Brahma) whose dam Sweet Dreams Baby was also bred by Sir Peter Vela and Philip Vela.

Trained by Te Akau Racing’s Jason Bridgman and owned by Fortuna Darci’s Dream Syndicate, managed by John Galvin, Darci’s Dream's dam Sweet Dreams Baby is out of Pencarrow Stud mare Latino L’amour (Diesis).

Sweet Dreams Baby is the dam of four named foals who have all been winners including two-year-old Windborne – a full-sister to Darci’s Dream.

Darci’s Dream is by Pencarrow Stud graduate Darci Brahma who was also trained by Te Akau Racing.

Saturday’s Group 1 quinella follows the victory of Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj x Indomitable) in the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas a week earlier. Turn Me Loose’s dam Indomitable is owned by Pencarrow Stud and leased to George and Maryanne Simon who bred the son of Iffraaj.
