Promising Pencarrow Stud-bred El Nahra (Darci Brahma x Magical Moment) notched a second consecutive win in $7,000 Oamaru Liquorland (2200m) at Oamaru on Friday.
The win was his fourth start under trainer Neill Ridley, after his debut with trainers Peter and Dawn Williams. The son of Darci Brahma broke his maiden over 1600m at Phar Lap Raceway just one week earlier to Friday’s win.
“He ran very well,” commented Ridley. “We were very confident that he would do something given the way he had gone in his start before.
“He looks to like the longer trip, the longer the better, but he has gone to the paddock now until July and I will plan a programme for him when he returns.”
Ridden by Racha Cuneen, El Nahra followed the rail after jumping from barrier 1, tracking The Groomsman (NZ) (Black Tuxedo) who travelled in second position behind race-favourite Mr Wiz (NZ) (Remind). Otto The Great (Holy Roman Emperor) swept around the field with 800m to run, taking the lead resulting in Mr Wiz to drop back with El Nahra pulling out around him to find a clear run.
Producing an exceptional turn of foot, El Nahra chased down Otto The Great, who had raced ahead, sweeping passed for victory by one-and-three-quarter lengths over Otto The Great and Southern Raider (NZ) (Sakhee’s Secret), who finished in second and third place respectively.
The three-year-old gelding has now earned $8,750 in prizemoney for owners Sarah Green and Ger Beemsterboer of Barneswood Farm Ltd.
El Nahra was purchased by Ger Beemsterboer for $70,000 at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2013 Karaka Premier Sale from Pencarrow Stud.
Bred by Sir Peter Vela and Philip Vela, the son of Darci Brahma is a half-brother to stakes-winner Fears Nothing (Faltaat), winner of the Group 2 Rich Hill Mile and runner-up in the Group 1 Easter Handicap. He is also a half-brother to current Melbourne performer Correggio (Haradasun), winner of five races.
His dam, Magical Moment (Sadler’s Wells), is a full-sister to Short Pause (Sadler’s Wells), winner of the Group 3 Longchamp Prix d’Hedouville, and is a three-quarter-sister to Interim (Sadler’s Wells), winner of the Group 2 Calder La Prevoyante Handicap, and is a half-sister to Cheyenne Dream (Dancing Brave), winner of the Listed Longchamp Prix de Bagatelle.
