No Hassle for Hasselhoof

A debut performance for the Pencarrow Stud-bred Hasselhoof (NZ) (Tavistock) went the winning way at his hometrack of Ruakaka in the $10,000 Cowley’s Hire Centre 1400 on Saturday.

Trained by Donna Logan, Hasselhoof won a recent trial at Ellerslie in May over 1200m, after winning a trial prior to that in March, also over 1200m, by two-lengths.

“He has shown ability but on race-day you never quite know what is going to happen,” commented Logan. “He raced very greenly but it was a gutsy effort and his sectionals were amazing – he will be going places!

“I will just be taking it quietly with him and will see how he pulls up from this race before I look at lining him up for his next start.”

Matthew Cameron rode Hasselhoof in his first race from a wide barrier in a 14-horse field to settle behind mid-field racing three-wide. Inside 600m, Hasselhoof, the race-favourite, made his move around the outside of the field.

Stablemate Silencer (NZ) (Falkirk) hit the front on the home straight with a three-length advantage but Hasselhoof drove forward, challenging Silencer and bounded to the lead, taking victory by one-and-a-three-quarter-lengths over Silencer with Bloodstream (NZ) (Duelled) finishing third.

Breaking his maiden status has earned him $6,250 in prizemoney for his owners B Alexander, Garry Cossey, Donna Logan & WM Woods.

Donna Logan purchased Hasselhoof for $14,000 from Pencarrow Stud at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2013 Karaka Select Sale.

Bred by Sir Peter Vela and Philip Vela, the son of Tavistock is out of Alpine (Zabeel) and is a half-brother to stakes-winner Vercors (Catbird), winner of the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes. His dam is a full-sister to Manawa King (Zabeel), runner-up in the Group 1 Sydney Cup, and is a half-sister to stakes-winner Lord Ted (Lord Ballina), winner of the Group 1 Ellerslie Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Alpine foaled a colt in 2014 by Rip Van Winkle.

Pencarrow Stud-bred and owned Makarska (Keeper x Stanica) and North of Sunset (Red Ransome x Zygadene) performed a quinella later in the day, providing Pencarrow Stud with a double at Ruakaka.
