Winning Way for Wayside

Pencarrow Stud graduate Wayside (Choisir x Jeanetta Cochrane) displayed an emphatic three-length victory in the A$11,000 Carnarvon Growers Association Cup (1400m) at Carnarvon in Western Australia on Friday.

A winner of three races, Wayside’s first two triumphs came last season as a three-year-old when trained by Grant Williams. Shortly after running third in the Listed Detonator Stakes, he was relocated to Geoffrey Rodier’s Carnarvon stable. Having joined Rodier’s stable just three starts ago, Wayside ran third on two occasions before this winning performance.

Beginning the race from barrier 2 for apprentice rider Kate Fitzgerald, Wayside, the race-favourite, sprinted to a three-length victory over Trade Tip (Trade Fair) and Le Nizam (Holy Roman Emperor) who finished in second and third place respectively.

Purchased by John Chalmers Bloodstock for NZ$180,000 at the 2012 Karaka Premier Sale, the four-year-old gelding is now owned by Mr A Kuzmicich, Mr G Kuzmicich, Mr K Parker, Mr A V Perry, Mr A J Beard, Mrs M Beard, Mrs L Frzop, Ms L Kuzmicich, Ms N Bassett, Ms S Leighton, Ms Y Yugov, Mrs C Kearney, Mrs C C Bird, Ms J Babun, Mrs G Keyser and Mrs L E Ivey.

Bred by Sir Peter Vela and Philip Vela, the son of Choisir is out of unraced dam Jeanetta Cochrane (Sadler’s Wells). He is a half-brother to Group 2 Queensland Guineas winner Saxon (Danehill) and is also a half-brother to stakes placegetters Power of Destiny (Danehill) and Dane Shakira (Danehill).

Jeanetta Cochrane foaled a filly by Street Cry earlier in the season.
