Pencarrow Stud welcomed their first foal of the 2015 breeding season last week with a further four foals arriving over the weekend - the start of a busy breeding season ahead.

The first foal of the season was a colt by Keeper, New Zealand’s leading sire of individual winners for the second consecutive season in 2014/15, and is out of winning mare, Vandenne (Van Nistelrooy).

“He is a strong, good size colt,” commented Stud Manager Leon Casey. “This colt is a three-quarter-brother to Insouciant (Keeper) which we raced and who won the (Group 1) New Zealand One Thousand Guineas and was NZB Filly of the Year.”

Last season at Pencarrow Stud, Vandenne produced a colt by Australian sire Commands who will be heading to the National Yearling Sales Series at Karaka 2016.

“One of the most exciting foals that have arrived this season is an O’Reilly filly out of Dolmabache. She is an impressive foal and is the biggest foal yet,” adds Casey.

Dolmabache was the winner of the Group 2 Travis Stakes and was runner-up in the Group 1 International Stakes. A daughter of Redoute’s Choice out of the Zabeel mare Our Echezeaux, she is from the famous family of Romanee Conti (Sir Tristram) and Ethereal (Rhythm) and is a full-sister to the Group 3 winner Pure Elegance.

This is Dolmabache’s second foal, after producing a filly last year by Champion Sire More Than Ready.

Among the mares that have already foaled this season include Camellia, a daughter of Redoute’s Choice, producing a colt by Rip Van Winkle, and maiden mares Adolay, foaling a filly by Battle Paint, and Siciliani, producing a filly by Reliable Man.

Pencarrow Stud is expecting 57 foals on the ground this season by an extensive range of top sires from both New Zealand and Australia.

“Insouciant, Banchee and Guiseppina were covered by Savabeel which we are looking forward to and we are also expecting progeny of Pierro, Snitzel, Redoute’s Choice and Lonhro,” notes Casey.

Pencarrow Stud are expecting the first foals from Carlton House, Declaration of War, Epaulette, Shamexpress and Shamus Award, who all commenced stud duties in the 2014 breeding season.
