Pencarrow Stud-bred Hasselhoof (Tavistock x Alpine) retained his perfect winning record as he successfully stepped up to a middle distance on Saturday to win the $20,000 Thomson Wilson 2100 at Ruakaka.

Hasselhoof kept his perfect record intact with Saturday’s success, his fourth victory from four starts. Trained by Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs, his four appearances have been on his home track at Ruakaka with wins over 1400m, 1600m and 2100m.

“This horse is so untapped and he’s still such a baby,” said Logan. “I’m going to recommend we put him in the paddock. We’ve talked about Melbourne but I don’t think he is strong enough mentally at this point in time.

“We wanted to ride him back and have the last crack at them but they weren’t doing much early and he was going to get flushed out wide. So Matt went forward.”

Regular rider Matthew Cameron steadied Hasselhoof in the early stages, after commencing the race from an outside barrier. Working into the back straight, Cameron sent Hasselhoof forward to settle in second position behind pace-maker Canterino (Oratorio).

Racing three-wide as he reached the top of the straight, race-favourite Hasselhoof hit the front inside 200m. The son of Tavistock sprinted away in final strides for a one-and-a-half-length victory over Smedley (NZ) (Colombia) and Canterino who finished in second and third place respectively.

The four-year-old gelding is raced by a host of owners including Sir Peter Vela, who bred him with Philip Vela, Sir Patrick Hogan, the Dowager Duchess of Bedford, Donna Logan, Garry Cossey, Blair Alexander and the estate of the late Bill Woods.

Logan purchased Hasselhoof as a yearling at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2013 Karaka Select Sale for $14,000 from Pencarrow Stud.

“There’s a lot more in store for him. He’s going places and I’m very pleased to have him in my stable,” added Logan.

The son of Tavistock is out of a Zabeel mare Alpine and is a half-brother to stakes-winner Vercors (Catbird), winner of the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes. His dam is a full-sister to Manawa King (Zabeel), a runner-up in the Group 1 Sydney Cup, and is a half-sister to stakes-winner Lord Ted (Ballina), winner of the Group 1 Ellerslie Sires’ Produce Stakes.
