Pencarrow Racing’s international galloper Torcedor (Fastnet Rock x Magnolia Lane) featured at Ireland’s The Curragh again last night, winning the €150,000 Northfields Handicap (2000m).

Torcedor won his first race two starts ago over 2400m at The Curragh’s Group 1 featured Oak’s Day, shortly followed by a second place finish at Galway. Starting in six races, he has placed on three occasions for trainer David Wachman.

“He’s a nice horse and did it well,” commented Wachman. “He is an improving horse. He ran well in Galway. He’ll be a nice four-year-old next year. He’s very big and is only coming to himself.”

In a field of 21, Torcedor, ridden by Wayne Lordan, drew the widest barrier, settling in seventh position as he chased the leaders. Torcedor got a clear run inside 400m and lead the final stages, holding off a late challenge to win by a short head over Fog of War (Azamour) who finished in second place and Maudlin Magdalen (Dylan Thomas) in third.

Purchased as a yearling at the Deauville August Yearling Sale in France, the now three-year-old gelding is owned and raced by Sir Peter Vela, Sir Patrick Hogan, Laurie Laxon, Mohammed Moussa and managed by Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis.

The son of Fastnet Rock is out of Sadler’s Wells mare Magnolia Lane, a full sister to seven-time Group 1 winner Yeats (Sadler’s Wells). Magnolia Lane is also a three-quarter-sister to Listed stakes winner Nassma (Sadler’s Wells) and is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Solskjaer (Danehill) and Tsukuba Symphoney (Danehill), winner of a Japan Group 3 race.
