Breaking his maiden status yesterday at Hastings with a fresh up win was Pencarrow Stud graduate Bordeaux (High Chaparral x Our Echezeaux) winning the $7,000 Bostock New Zealand Mile (1600m).

Pencarrow Stud will be offering a half-brother to Bordeaux, a colt by the highest rated horse to ever race Frankel, at the New Zealand Bloodstock 2016 National Yearling Sales Series.

Bordeaux was purchased by Te Akau’s David Ellis at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2013 Premier Sale for $620,000 from Pencarrow Stud and is now raced by the Te Akau 2013 Breeding Syndicate.

“I thought on pedigree he is the best horse in the sale,” said Ellis. “We have had a lot of luck with this family. Darci Brahma won five Group 1 races amongst nine stakes wins, Burgundy has already won four stakes’ races, we won the Listed Welcome Stakes with Bespoke, and Uberalles we trained to run third in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby. We have had a terrific success with everything we have trained from the family.”

He was the second success for Ellis over the weekend, following an extraordinary 8.5 length victory by Xtravagant (NZ) (Pentire) in the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas at Riccarton Park on Saturday, who was also sold at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Premier Sale.

Registered in Te Akau Racing’s colours, Bordeaux, trained by Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards, made his debut this time last year, and has since had two starts in autumn, both over 1400m.

“He’s a lovely looking horse, that seems to have turned the corner, and we’re thrilled to see him put it together on the race track for his very patient owners,” commented Richards. “Hopefully we can see him step up again from here and work through the grades. We have changed his gear around, and training regime, to keep him focussed and it seems to be working.”

Commencing from barrier 10 for jockey Michael McNab, Bordeaux quickly went to the lead to set the pace. Following the rail around the turn, he saw off his rival at the top of the straight and careered to the line to win by one-and-a-quarter-lengths over Kininmont (NZ) (Gold Centre) with Wrong Belt (NZ) (No Excuse Needed) in third.

The son of High Chaparral, bred by Sir Peter Vela and Philip Vela, is out of the Pencarrow Stud mare Our Echezeaux (Zabeel), a full-sister to Grand Echezeaux (Zabeel), winner of the Group 1 Australasian Oaks, and is a three-quarter-sister to stakes-winner Romanee Conti (Sir Tristram), the dam of Champion racemare Ethereal (Rhythm).

The following race at Hastings saw Echezeaux (Encosta de Lago x Grand Echezeaux), a close relation to Bordeaux, finish second, beaten less than a length. Raced by Sir Peter Vela, Echezeaux is also trained by Te Akau Racing trainers Autridge and Richards.
