Pencarrow Stud-bred galloper Jolly Jolly (Stratum x Paolino) broke through for his maiden victory in Hong Kong on Saturday, winning the HK$800,000 Panasonic Induction Cooker Handicap (1400m).

Making his racing debut earlier this year in Hong Kong for trainer Paul O’Sullivan, there has only been one occasion among his six starts where Jolly Jolly hasn’t placed.

“He is a superb product of Pencarrow Stud,” commented O’Sullivan. “He is a very nice horse and I think he will get better as he goes further. He is very progressive.”

Commencing from barrier 12 in a 14-horse field for jockey Zac Purton, Jolly Jolly went forward in the early stages to settle one off the fence just a half-length off the leader Bold Stitch (Onemorenomore).

Jolly Jolly edged up to challenge Bold Stitch inside the 250m and dashed ahead to take victory by one-and-a-half-lengths over Unbeatable Guts (Encosta de Lago), who ranged up for second place, with Bold Stitch in third.

“I will look at racing him at the International meeting on 13 December next,” added O’Sullivan.

The four-year-old gelding was purchased at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2013 Premier Sale for $150,000 to NZB as agent from Pencarrow Stud.

He is now raced by Lo Kui Lun, Lo Hoe, Stanley Lo Shek Yin & Sharon Lo Ching Wun.

Bred by Sir Peter Vela and Philip Vela, the son of Stratum is out stakes winning mare Paolino (Housebuster), winner of the Group 2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes, and a half-sister to Group 2 Royal Stakes winner Sarwatch (Jetball). Paolino is the dam of six winners including stakes-winner Mirandola (O’Reilly), winner of the Listed 2YO Fillies’ Stakes.

Paolino foaled a colt this season by kiwi Champion racehorse So You Think.
