Pencarrow Racing promising mare Devil’s Harmony (Pentire x Devil’s Song) won her first race in New Zealand with victory in the $7,000 Chain Rigging & Scaffolding Rating 65 (1200m) at New Plymouth on Wednesday.

Devil’s Harmony jumped well from barrier one to settle in a perfect trail for rider Lisa Allpress. Tiebreaker (NZ) (Swiss Ace), along with Lilly Pins (NZ) (Pins), set the pace with Devil’s Harmony in behind in third place. Allpress got the split between the two leaders with 200m to run and justified her strong support, getting the better of Tiebreaker in the last 100m to win by a length with a further length back to Wheeler Fortune (NZ) (Elusive City) in third position.

“She had been knocking on the door this campaign and got a great trip from the one draw,” commented Garry Cossey, Sir Peter Vela’s racing manager. “Hopefully there is more in store, now she has got a bit of confidence from the win,” he added.

Devil’s Harmony started her career in Australia winning her debut at Sandown as a two-year-old. She had three more starts there before returning to New Zealand for new trainers Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie.

The four-year-old mare now has two wins and three placings from 9 starts and has earned $35,868 in stakes.

Owned by Sir Peter Vela, who bred Devil’s Harmony with Philip Vela, she is out of the unraced mare Devil’s Song (Stravinsky). Devil’s Song is out of Sir Tristram mare Devil’s Lair who produced 2002 New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Vapour Trail (Jetball), winner of the Group 1 NZ Oaks, Group 2 Eight Carat Classic and the Group 2 Sir Tristram Fillies Classic.

Devil’s Song foaled a filly this season by Champion Australian Sprinter Exceed and Excel.
