Pencarrow Stud graduate Bordeaux (High Chaparral x Our Echezeaux) provided a well-timed win with his half-brother by Frankel catalogued at the Karaka Premier Sale next week.

Bordeaux comfortably won the $8,000 The Hits 98.6FM 2100 (2100m) at Te Rapa yesterday, enhancing Pencarrow Stud’s entered half-brother to Bordeaux (Lot 445), a colt by the highest rated horse to ever race Frankel, at the New Zealand Bloodstock 2016 National Yearling Sales Series.

A $620,000 purchase at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2013 Premier Sale from Pencarrow Stud draft, Bordeaux was purchased by Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis and is raced by the Te Akau 2013 Breeding Syndicate.

Ellis has had great success with the family having purchased and raced Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill), the winner of five Group 1 races, and Burgundy (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice), a winner of five stakes races.

Bordeaux is trained by Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards and has won three races from eight starts with earnings of $18,250.

“We’ll likely head to Te Rapa on February 6^th for a Rating 75 $22,500 race over 2100 metres,” commented Autridge. “We have changed his gear from blinkers to visor blinkers after his win at Taranaki in December. After hitting the front, he got a bump from behind and he took off, so we thought we’ll try the visor blinkers so he can see behind, it seems to have worked.”

Drawn barrier five with champion jockey Matthew Cameron aboard, Bordeaux settled on the outside of pacemaker Colonel Carrera (NZ) (Duelled) early on before Irish Gem (NZ) (Volksraad) went around the field to take the lead. The son of High Chaparral remained on the new pace-makers flanks turning for home and under the urgings from Cameron took the lead with 200m to run and scored by one-and-half-lengths. Colonel Carrera battled on late to finished second and El Pistola (NZ) (El Hermano) finished a head back in third.

Bred by Sir Peter Vela and Philip Vela, Bordeaux is out of the Pencarrow Stud mare Our Echezeaux (Zabeel), a full-sister to Grand Echezeaux (Zabeel), winner of the Group 1 Australasian Oaks, and is a three-quarter-sister to stakes-winner Romanee Conti (Sir Tristram), the dam of Group 1 Melbourne and Caulfield Cup winner Ethereal (Rhythm).
