Emphatic Win for Meritaggio

Talented Pencarrow mare Meritaggio scored the second win of her career when she dominated her Rating 65 opposition at Tauranga on Saturday.

Ridden by Leith Innes for trainers Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie, the four-year-old Road To Rock mare sat at the rear of the small field before pouncing in the straight and powering away to win by two and a quarter lengths.

Meritaggio has now had 12 starts for two wins and five placings, earning more than $23,000 in stakes. She was bred and raced by Sir Peter Vela in partnership with expat New Zealander Laurie Laxon, who has become a legendary trainer in Singapore.

Laurie Laxon and Sir Peter and Phillip Vela also shared ownership of Meritaggio’s granddam Clear Rose, who won six races including the Group 1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas, the Group 2 Japan/NZ International Trophy, the Group 3 Eulogy Stakes and the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes.
