Fresh-up win for Echezeaux (NZ)

Beautifully bred Pencarrow mare Echezeaux (NZ) (Encosta De Lago) made the perfect start to her new campaign with a stylish win in the Waterview 1600 at Avondale on Wednesday.

Ridden by Matthew Cameron for trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards, Echezeaux came from the back of the field to beat Pinstripe (NZ) (Pins) by half a length. The win was the five-year-old mare’s third from eight career starts.

Bred and raced by Sir Peter Vela, Echezeaux comes from Pencarrow’s most famous family. She is out of the Group One-winning Zabeel mare Grand Echezeaux (NZ), the dam of Group One winner and top sire Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill), as well as the multiple stakes winner Burgundy (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) and stakes-placed Saperavi (NZ) (Stravinsky).

Grand Echezeaux is a sister to Our Echezeaux (NZ), the dam of stakes winners Dolmabache (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) and Pure Elegance (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice). She is also a three-quarter sister to Romanee Conti (NZ) (Sir Tristram), a multiple stakes winner and the dam of Caulfield and Melbourne Cup heroine Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm).

Echezeaux’s half-brother Burgundy has also had a good week, siring his first winner with Hard Merchandize (NZ) at Otaki on Tuesday.
