Four-year-old Pencarrow Stud mare Seraphim (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle) scored the first win of her career in dominant style at Avondale on Tuesday.

Seraphim came from last in the 11-horse field in the 1400-metre AJC.co.nz Maiden, hitting the lead 200 metres from home and drawing away to win by three and a quarter lengths. She was ridden by Danielle Johnson for trainers Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie.

Seraphim’s first win came at her sixth start. She had finished in the first five in all of her previous appearances, finishing third on three occasions and fifth in the other two.

Seraphim became the sixth winner from seven foals to race out of the mighty mare Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm), who famously won the 2001 Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double among her four Group 1 wins.

Three of Ethereal’s progeny have black-type to their name, with Uberalles (NZ) (Giant’s Causeway) placing in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby, Duquesa (NZ) (Encosta De Lago) placing in the Group 3 Manawatu Cup and Imperium (NZ) (Encosta De Lago) running third in the Group 3 New Zealand Cup just last Saturday.

Another daughter of Ethereal, Sopra Tutto (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy), is the dam of Eleonora (NZ) (Makfi) who won last month’s Group 3 Ethereal Stakes at Caulfield and ran third in the Group 1 VRC Oaks.
