Pencarrow Double at New Plymouth

The blue and white hooped silks of Pencarrow Stud’s racing team were carried to two impressive victories at New Plymouth on Tuesday.

The first race of the day was taken out by Moral Code (NZ) (Makfi), who won the $7,000 Dman Entertainment Maiden (1800m) by a length and a quarter. Ridden by Jonathan Riddell for trainers Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie, his first win came in his third raceday appearance.

The seventh race, the $8,000 Farmlands Rating 75 (2000m), was won by the Rosie Myers-ridden Sopraffina (NZ) (High Chaparral). The five-year-old, who is also trained by Ramsay and Ritchie, has now won three of her nine starts and holds a nomination for the $500,000 Group 1 Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup (3200m) in March.

Both winners are out of the Van Nistelrooy mare Sopra Tutto (NZ), which makes them siblings to one of this season’s outstanding three-year-old fillies in Eleonora (NZ) (Makfi). The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained filly won the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield and placed in the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m).

Sopra Tutto is a daughter of the champion Pencarrow mare Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm) who won four Group 1 races including a famous Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double in 2001.
