Fourth win for Pencarrow mare Sopraffina (NZ)

Well-bred Pencarrow Stud mare Sopraffina (NZ) (High Chaparral) recorded the fourth win of her 13-start career when she took out the $10,000 Ssangyong 2100 at Pukekohe on Wednesday.

Ridden by Leith Innes for trainers Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie, the five-year-old mare sat at the rear of the small field before taking off around the outside at the 500-metre mark. She challenged for the lead soon after straightening for home, and she proved too strong as she edged clear to win by three-quarters of a length.

Sopraffina has now earned more than $32,000 in stakes for her owner-breeder Sir Peter Vela.

By the internationally renowned sire High Chaparral, Sopraffina is out of the unraced Van Nistelrooy mare Sopra Tutto (NZ), who in turn is a daughter of the champion Pencarrow mare Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm).

The winner of four Group 1 races including the Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup, Ethereal is the dam of six winners including the stakes placegetters Uberalles (NZ) (Giant's Causeway), Duquesa (NZ) (Encosta De Lago) and Imperium (NZ) (Encosta De Lago).

Sopra Tutto has so far produced three winners, the best of them being this season's high-class three-year-old filly Eleonora (NZ) (Makfi), who has won three races including the Group 3 Sunline Vase (2100m) at Ellerslie and a fitting victory in the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield.
