The beautifully bred and highly promising Pencarrow mare Seraphim (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle) continued her impressive progress through the grades with her second consecutive win in Saturday’s $30,000 Woodridge Estate Premier (1600m) at Trentham.

Having won by almost four lengths at Awapuni in her previous start, Seraphim was the clear favourite for Saturday’s race. The margin may have been smaller on this occasion, but the performance was no less convincing. Ridden by Danielle Johnson for trainers Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie, the five-year-old came with a well-timed run down the outside of the track and scored by a length.

Bred and raced by Sir Peter Vela, Seraphim has now had 12 starts for three wins, six placings and $49,935 in prize-money.

Seraphim is out of the legendary Pencarrow mare Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm), who won four Group 1 races including the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in 2001.

The great mare has produced seven foals to race, six winners including the stakes performers Uberalles (NZ) (Giant’s Causeway), Duquesa (NZ) (Encosta De Lago) and Imperium (NZ) (Encosta De Lago), along with the unraced Sopra Tutto (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) – dam of multiple stakes winner Eleonora (NZ) (Makfi).
