Sleeping Beauty (NZ) All the Way at Matamata

Pencarrow mare Sleeping Beauty (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle) produced a sparkling front-running performance in Saturday’s $30,000 Russell & Yvonne Green Memorial (1200m) at Matamata.

Trained on the track by Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott for owner-breeder Sir Peter Vela, Sleeping Beauty went straight to the front of the talented sprint field. Rider Darren Danis rated her nicely in the lead and she kicked strongly in the straight to win by a length and a half.

Sleeping Beauty won the same race at last year’s meeting. She has now had 16 starts for seven wins, four placings and $109,250 in prize-money. She has a black-type placing to her name in this year’s Listed Opunake Cup (1400m).

Saturday’s win added to a remarkable few days for the Pencarrow Racing team, with Terra Firma (NZ) (Reliable Man), Wild Child (NZ) (Darci Brahma) and Siren Call (NZ) (New Approach) all winning during the week.

Sleeping Beauty is out of the three-time winning Danehill mare Kailey Princess (NZ). That mare has produced eight winners from 10 foals to race including the stakes placegetters Prosperous Bid (NZ) (Carnegie) and Canny Princess (NZ) (Canny Lad).

Another of Kailey Princess’s foals, Sea Island (NZ) (Woodman) is the dam of the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap winner Herculian Prince (NZ) (Yamanin Vital).
