Timely Win for Supera (NZ)

This week marks 17 years since legendary Pencarrow mare Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm) won the Melbourne Cup, and her granddaughter Supera (NZ) (Savabeel) marked that anniversary by carrying the same colours to victory at Avondale.

The talented four-year-old recorded the fourth win of her eight-start career with an impressive performance in Wednesday’s West Brook Wines 1600. Rider Danielle Johnson settled her near the rear of the eight-horse field, then turned her loose in the straight and she swept to victory by a length and a quarter.

Trained at Matamata by Ken and Bev Kelso and Mark Donoghue, Supera has now earned $29,500 in prizemoney for owner-breeder Sir Peter Vela.

Supera is out of Ethereal’s unraced daughter Sopra Tutto (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy), who is the dam of four winners from five foals to race. The best of those to date has been Eleonora (NZ) (Makfi), who won two Group 3 races and placed in the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m).
