Deserved Win for Talented Palamedes (NZ)

Talented Pencarrow mare Palamedes (NZ) (Pierro) capped a consistent form line with a well-deserved breakthrough win in Thursday’s $10,000 West Brook Wines 1400 at Avondale.

The four-year-old went into the fillies and mares’ event with a career record of 10 wins for one second, three thirds, two fourths and two fifths. She had frequently been close-up against talented opposition.

On Thursday the Peter and Dawn Williams-trained mare got her reward. Rider Vinnie Colgan sent Palamedes forward from her wide gate and took the lead inside the first 200 metres. She kicked stylishly in the straight and scored a clear-cut win by a length and three-quarters.

Palamedes was bred by Pencarrow Thoroughbreds Ltd and is owned by Sir Peter Vela.

She is the second winner from two foals to race out of the classy Pencarrow performer Papilio (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice), whose four wins included the Listed South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m).

Second dam Lafleur (NZ) (Zabeel) won the Group 2 Royal Stakes (2000m) and Sir Tristram Fillies’ Classic (2000m) and is also the dam of Group 3 winner Amaryllis (NZ) (Red Ransom).

Other close relatives in this quality family include the multiple Group 1 winner Humidor (NZ) (Teofilo) and the Group 1-placed Wildflower (NZ) (Keeper).
