In 2008 Pencarrow Stud established its own dedicated training facility at Maungatautari, near Lake Karapiro. On land leased from esteemed New Zealand trainer, Laurie Laxon, who is now based in Singapore, the farm has a proud history of producing outstanding racehorses, including Pencarrow’s own champion, Ethereal, trained by Sheila Laxon to win the G1 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups double in 2001.

The property is now home to the Pencarrow Racing string, under the care of the training partnership of Steven ‘Rambo’ Ramsay & Julia Ritchie.

This season Sir Peter Vela has also had horses in the stables of Lee Freedman, Jason Warren, John Sargent, Chris Waller, Liam Birchley and David Hayes in Australia; Lance O’Sullivan & Andrew Scott, Roger James, Jason Bridgman, Shaune Ritchie, Frank Ritchie, Stephen Marsh, Graham Richardson, John Bell, Ken Kelso, Kevin Myers, Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman, Peter McKay, Lisa Latta, Jan Hay, Tony Pike, Raylene Whiteside, Peter & Dawn William, and Donna Logan in New Zealand; Laurie Laxon, William Haggas and Michael Freedman in Singapore; and Charlie Hills and David Wachman in the UK.

In August 2013 we welcomed a new member to the team with the appointment of Garry Cossey as Pencarrow Racing Manager, and in May 2014 we added Hall of Fame trainer Lee Freedman to the team as Director of Racing.
