Looksmart Breaks Maiden Ranks

The promising Pencarrow bred three-year-old Looksmart is on his way to bigger things after breaking his maiden yesterday at Wangaratta in a A$12,000 Maiden (1600m).

Trained by Brian Cox, Looksmart (Pins x Perrine) came into the race with three career starts under his belt and was too strong for his opposition, winning by three-quarters-of-a-length.

The gelding had shown promise in his previous starts, running second on debut at Terang over 1400 metres before running fourth over 1450 metres at Kyenton two starts ago.

Bred by Peter and Philip Vela, Looksmart was purchased by Rogerson Bloodstock from New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2010 Karaka Premier Sale for $380,000.

Looksmart is from the Zabeel mare Perrine, a sister to the Group 1 winning mare Grand Echezeaux, dam of the five time Group 1 winner and sire Darci Brahma (Danehill), and a three-quarter sister to Group 3 winner Romanee Conti (Sir Tristram), the dam of the Melbourne Cup winner Ethereal (Rhythm).

A foundation family for Pencarrow Stud, the family has been enjoying recent success on the track with three-year-old Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice x Grand Echezeaux) winning twice at stakes level this season and Darci Brahma siring his first Group 1 winner in Artistic who won the New Zealand Oaks.

Perrine produced a yearling colt by Pins in 2010, has a weanling filly at foot by O’Reilly and was served again by O’Reilly last season.
