Tom Wins in Singapore on Derby Night

The Pencarrow Stud-bred Tom (Darci Brahma) was the stylish winner of the S$95,000 Hello Sweden Stakes (1400m) at Kranji on the undercard to the Singapore Derby last night.

The son of another Pencarrow Stud-bred horse in Darci Brahma, Tom swept from well back in the field with a sustained sprint to get up in the dying stages of the race.

Settling near the tail of the field with a steady pace being set by the leaders, as the field wheeled into the straight, jockey Corey Brown found himself with only one horse behind him. He did not panic and pulled Tom to the extreme outside and let down with a tantalising sprint to overhaul stablemate and fellow NZ-bred Full Toss (Coats Choice) to win by half-a-length.

The win of Tom brought trainer Laurie Laxon to 999 career wins in Singapore.

“He’s a just a good handy horse and he will go through the grades,” said Laxon

Laxon is unsure of where he will go next with the horse.

Tom is the first foal of Centaine Boito Belle, a half-sister to Group 1 winner Winning Belle. She is the dam of stakes-placed Another Holdup (Postponed). She currently has a weanling filly by Darci Brahma, making it a full-sister to Tom, and is believed in foal to Darci Brahma again.

Tom has won six of his 24 starts and S$300,000 in earnings.

Tom was brought by Laxon at the 2010 Karaka Ready to Run Sale when offered by Kilgraven Lodge. He had been passed in as a yearling at the Karaka Premier Sale earlier that year from the draft of Pencarrow Stud.
