Beautifully bred Pencarrow mare Asama Blue (Fastnet Rock) collected the second win of her short career in Thursday’s $22,500 McIntosh Farm Machinery & Cranes Handicap (1550m) at Awapuni.

She was born in Ireland and made a winning debut at Haydock in England in May last year before travelling to New Zealand.

After beginning her Kiwi career with three thirds and a fifth, she broke through in style on Thursday for trainers Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie and jockey Alysha Collett. The five-year-old raced in midfield before sprinting down the outside in the straight to score by three-quarters of a length.

Asama Blue has now had six starts for two wins and three placings, earning more than $25,000 in prize-money.

By champion sire Fastnet Rock out of a Sadler’s Wells mare, Asama Blue boasts an exceptional pedigree.

Her dam Butterfly Blue is a full-sister to the stakes-placed Maryinsky, dam of Group One winners Peeping Fawn and Thewayyouare. Another sibling, Better Than Honour, produced the Gr. 1 Belmont Stakes winners Rags To Riches and Jazil.

The second dam is the Kentucky Oaks winner Blush With Pride, whose 11 foals to race included nine winners – three at stakes level.

Asama Blue was bred by Barronstown Stud. Pencarrow’s Sir Peter Vela shares ownership with Mrs John Magnier and Mrs David Nagle.
