Bonifleur (NZ) Romps at Ruakaka

Talented Pencarrow mare Bonifleur (NZ) (Burgundy) added a second win to her CV with a runaway victory in Wednesday’s $18,500 Art In Stone (1200m) at Ruakaka.

Trained by Paul Richards at Matamata, Bonifleur was a winner on debut at Tauranga in February, and her five starts since then produced a fifth at Taupo, a seventh in heavy ground at Tauranga, and solid runs to finish fourth and sixth at Ellerslie this spring.

The seventh start of her career produced a welcome and emphatic return to winning form on Wednesday. Ridden by apprentice jockey Niranjan Parmar, Bonifleur jumped only fairly from a wide gate and settled in third-last through the early part of the race.

Parmar allowed the four-year-old to stride forward around the outside of the field coming up to the home turn, and she loomed behind the leading trio at the top of the straight.

Bonifleur balanced up and accelerated through the last 300 metres, powering away from her nine rivals to win three and a half lengths.

With seven starts for two wins, a fourth and two fifths, Bonifleur has now earned $30,205 in stakes.

Bonifleur was bred by Pencarrow Thoroughbreds Ltd and is raced by Sir Peter Vela. She is a daughter of the late Burgundy (NZ), who himself was bred and sold by Pencarrow.

Burgundy was a $1.3m yearling purchase by David Ellis at Karaka 2010, and he won five stakes races and placed in the Group One Telegraph (1200m) before retiring to stand at Cambridge Stud. His 12 stakes-winning progeny include Group One stars Maven Belle (NZ), Belle En Rouge (NZ) and this year’s Telegraph winner Mercurial (NZ).

Bonifleur is the third winner from three named foals out of her dam Arpeggio (NZ) (Tavistock), who herself won four races in the Pencarrow colours. Arpeggio is a half-sister to the Listed winner Harb (NZ) (Catbird) and the stakes-placed Cortado (NZ) (Sepoy).

Bonifleur’s second dam Macchiato (NZ) (Night Shift) is a half-sister to the stakes winner and Group One-placed Filante Etoile (NZ) (Soviet Star), while another half-sister, Cavendish Belle (NZ) (Thorn Park), is the dam of Group One-winning Burgundy mare Belle En Rouge.

Arpeggio produced one more foal after Bonifleur – a colt by Street Boss that was bought by Hong Kong’s Tartan Meadow Bloodstock for $70,000 during Book 1 of Karaka 2024.
