Branciforti (NZ) Caps Stunning Treble for Huluava (NZ)

Pencarrow’s broodmare marvel Huluava (NZ) (Pins) was credited with her third winner within the space of just six days when Branciforti (NZ) (Belardo) took out the inaugural $100,000 Martin Collins PolyTrack Innovation Race (1400m) at Awapuni on Friday.

Branciforti’s two-length romp followed on from a sensational double at Riccarton last Saturday, where Pencarrow graduate Jay Bee Gee (NZ) (Complacent) won the $110,000 Group Three Winning Edge Presentations Winter Cup (1600m) and homebred Pencarrow mare Harmonious (NZ) (Turn Me Loose) scored a five-length runaway in the $35,000 Group 1 Raceday Party Rating 65 (1600m).

Like Harmonious, Branciforti races in the distinctive blue and white hooped colours of Sir Peter Vela. From 14 starts, Branciforti has now recorded five wins and a placing, earning $117,975 in prize-money.

Branciforti went into Friday’s race as three-time winner on synthetic tracks, and the five-year-old further demonstrated her prowess on those surfaces with her commanding performance at Awapuni.

Ridden by Sam Spratt for Te Rapa trainer David Greene, Branciforti was handily placed in third before hooking out at the home turn to challenge the front-running Monza (NZ) (Rios).

Branciforti quickly asserted her superiority down the straight, striding past Monza and pulling clear to win by two lengths. The 1400 metres were run in 1:23.12.

“I don’t know who is having a better week, Sam Spratt or Huluava, they are both having a brilliant week,” Greene said.

“It looked a pretty even field for this race at first glance, and she has put them away very well. I think her last start was a career-best performance, particularly the way she accelerated off the corner, much better than she has done previously. She is getting stronger and she is heading in the right direction. She is probably a level up on where we first thought she would get to, so she has done well for herself.

“Now we are going to have to find out if she can handle the turf, because there won’t be many other options for her. But she is a very genuine horse and is getting stronger and better all the time. Garry Cossey (Pencarrow racing manager) can try to find a race somewhere to see if we can get her a little bit of black type.”

Branciforti is one of nine winners from nine foals to race out of Huluava, who is retired from breeding but remains at Pencarrow on nanny duties. Those nine winners include stakes winners Jay Bee Gee and William Wallace (NZ) (Darci Brahma). Another of Huluava’s daughters, Hirondelle (NZ) (Sepoy), is the dam of Group One winner Pignan (NZ) (Staphanos).

Huluava is a half-sister to two stakes performers. Hasselhoof (NZ) (Tavistock) won the Group Two Rich Hill Mile (1600m) and placed in the Group One Livamol Classic (2040m), while Vercors (NZ) (Catbid) won the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m). Vercors is herself the dam of Pencarrow’s stakes-placed mare Vichy (NZ) (Cape Blanco).

“It’s a really, really under-rated family and it just keeps on keeping on,” Pencarrow manager Leon Casey commented this week. “Huluava was very lightly raced and talented, we did take her to Brisbane as a three-year-old but she pulled up sore.

“Branciforti and Harmonious can hopefully go on with it and there might be a decent race in one or the other of them in the future.”
