Fosse (NZ) Another Promising Talent in Pencarrow’s Filly Crop
05 December 2024
There is plenty of potential among this season’s crop of three-year-old fillies in the Pencarrow racing team, and Fosse (NZ) (Darci Brahma) added her name to that list at Rotorua on Wednesday.
Following on from the likes of two-race winner Sesimbra (NZ) (U S Navy Flag) and the recent Group Three placegetter Island Life (NZ) (Vadamos), the lightly raced Fosse became the latest Pencarrow filly to hint at bigger and better things over the upcoming summer.
Wednesday’s $25,000 Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series (1560m) was the second start for Fosse, who had made her debut with a third placing over 1600 metres at Te Rapa on November 9. The Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie-trained filly carried on to Rotorua and took a big step forward at start number two.
Fosse was ridden by Sam Weatherley and enjoyed a perfect run in third along the rail before switching across the heels of the leaders just before the home turn.
Fosse quickened well in the straight and took command, striding to the lead and going on to beat Miss Understood (NZ) (Niagara) by three-quarters of a length. There was another two and three-quarter lengths back to third.
From two starts, Fosse has now had a win and a placing and earned $16,625. She has been added to the TAB’s fixed-odds market for the Group One New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at Trentham in March, for which she is now an $18 chance. Her stablemate Island Life is just ahead of her at $16.
Fosse was bred by Pencarrow Thoroughbreds Ltd and is raced by Sir Peter Vela. She is by the Pencarrow-bred stallion Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill), who was a $1.1m purchase from Pencarrow’s yearling draft at Karaka in 2024 and went on to multiple Group One successes both on the racetrack and at stud.
The dam of Fosse is Choreography (NZ) (Volksraad), who placed on the track and is a half-sister to the Group-winning Pencarrow mares Rasa Lila (NZ) (Darci Brahma) and Posavina (NZ) (Tiger Hill).
