Four-Length Stakes Win for Pencarrow-bred Pemba Bay

A runaway victory in Sunday’s Listed Prix la Sorellina – Chateau de Portets (1600m) at La Teste de Buch in France saw classy filly Pemba Bay (Blue Point) become the latest stakes winner bred by Pencarrow Stud.

Bred by Pencarrow in partnership with owners Haras D’Etreham, the three-year-old has had nine starts for two wins, four placings and prize-money of 95,397 euros.

A maiden winner at Le Mans in May, Pemba Bay stepped up to stakes level on Sunday and scored an emphatic win.

Jockey Augustin Madamet positioned Pemba Bay in second on the outside of the leader, then allowed her to stride forward to take control of the race coming down the side of the track towards the home turn.

Pemba Bay quickened impressively in the straight and raced away from her 13 opponents, opening up a commanding winning margin of four lengths.

The Prix la Sorellina winner is a daughter of the Shamardal stallion Blue Point, whose 98 winners include seven at black-type level, headed by this season’s Group One Irish 2000 Guineas (1600m) and St James’s Palace Stakes (1600m) hero Rosallion.

Pemba Bay became the fourth individual stakes performer for the exceptional broodmare Purely Princess (Galileo), who is also the dam of the Listed winner Alzire (Shamardal), Group Two placegetter Tasman Bay (Le Havre) and Listed placegetter Palmyre (Dansili). Pencarrow bred both Alzire and Tasman Bay, and the latter also raced in Pencarrow’s globally recognisable blue and white hooped colours.

Purely Priceless is by the great Galileo out of top-class mare Peeping Fawn (Danehill), who won the Group One Epsom Oaks (2400m), Irish Oaks (2400m), Nassau Stakes (2000m) and Pretty Polly Stakes (2000m).

Peeping Fawn is the dam of September (Deep Impact), who won at Listed level and placed in the Group One Fillies’ Mile (1600m), Moyglare Stud Stakes (1400m) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (1800m). Peeping Fawn has also produced Listed winner and Group One fourth placegetter Willow (American Pharoah), as well as the Group Two-placed Sir John Hawkins (Henrythenavigator).

Others in this exceptional family include Group One stars Thewayyouare (Kingmambo), Blush With Pride (Blushing Groom), Rags to Riches (A.P. Indy), Jazil (Seeking the Gold) and Streaming (Smart Strike).
