Ipso Facto (NZ) Claims First Win With Flying Finish
29 June 2022
A withering late run out wide on the track has carried Pencarrow mare Ipso Facto (NZ) (More Than Ready) to an impressive first career victory in Wednesday’s $12,000 Pike Racing 1300 at Cambridge.
Trained by Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie, Ipso Facto finished eighth on debut in June of last year, then picked up fifth placings in January and in early June.
She jumped well from the inside gate in Wednesday’s maiden sprint, settling in a midfield position before drifting back towards the tail as the field made its way down the side of the track.
But rider Craig Grylls didn’t panic, calmly guiding Ipso Facto off the rail and into clear running approaching the home turn. The four-year-old swung out wide on the track in the straight and charged home, reeling in Super Wraith (NZ) (Super Easy) to score by a head.
The win was Ipso Facto’s first from a four-start career, lifting her prize-money earnings to $7,400.
Ipso Facto was bred by Pencarrow Thoroughbreds Ltd and is raced by Sir Peter Vela.
She is by one of the world’s greatest-ever shuttle stallions, More Than Ready, who has sired over 2000 winners worldwide including 884 in the USA, 860 in Australia, 61 in the United Kingdom and 40 in New Zealand. His 215 individual stakes winners include 26 at Group or Grade One level.
The dam of Ipso Facto is Irion (NZ) (Danroad), who won four races and also placed in the Group Two Rich Hill Mile (1600m) and Group Three Cuddle Stakes (1600m).
She is a half-sister to the Group One performer Octapussy (Octagonal), dam of Group Two winner Pussy Willow (NZ) (O’Reilly), Group One-placed Pussy O’Reilly (NZ) (O’Reilly) and Listed performers Inside Agent (NZ) (Stravinsky) and Caricature (NZ) (Power).
Another half-sister, Riesling (NZ) (Last Tycoon), is the dam of multiple stakes winner and prolific broodmare Valpolicella (NZ) (Red Ransom), whose progeny include Vavasour (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice), Vilanova (NZ) (Commands), Celebrity Dream (NZ) (Thorn Park) and Rondinella (NZ) (Ocean Park).
Ipso Facto is the first foal to race out of Irion, who has subsequently produced fillies by Tavistock (NZ), Zoustar and Super Seth.
