Pencarrow Presents Select Draft at NZB National Weanling Sale

Buyers will have a rare opportunity to purchase weanling stock from one of New Zealand’s leading thoroughbred nurseries when Pencarrow Stud presents a five-lot draft during next month’s NZB National Weanling Sale at Karaka.

The catalogue is now available to view online for the 2024 National Weanling Sale, which will be the first time since 2016 that Pencarrow has consigned a weanling draft. The stud’s earlier offerings at this sale have included numerous winners, headed by the Group performers Lord Pyrus (NZ) (Pyrus) and Arnantara (NZ) (Darci Brahma).

The 2024 draft is made up of three fillies and two colts, all boasting Pencarrow’s internationally renowned bloodlines. There are close relatives to stars such as Our Ella Belle (NZ) (Encosta de Lago), Plucky Belle (Mossman), Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill), Burgundy (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice), Nova Hawk (Hawk Wing), Magic Of Life (Seattle Slew), Sarwatch (NZ) (Jetball) and Riverina Charm (NZ) (Sir Tristram).

The sires represented among Pencarrow’s weanling draft are a mix of promising and promising stallions from both sides of the Tasman – Doubtland, Shocking, Circus Maximus, Nicconi and King Of Comedy.

“It’s been a few years since we’ve had any weanlings in this sale, but we’re looking to control our numbers a little bit and also explore outlets rather than selling exclusively at the yearling sale,” stud manager Leon Casey said.

“It’s a select weanling draft with some strong bloodlines represented. There’s something from most of our traditional families, and a good blend of stallions from around Australasia as well. We’re looking forward to offering these horses to the buying bench.”

All weanlings offered in the National Weanling Sale are eligible to be nominated for NZB’s lucrative Karaka Millions Series. Graduates can compete in the $1m TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m), followed by the $1.5m TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m), as well as the new $1m Mega Maiden Series comprising of 40 non-Saturday maiden races located throughout New Zealand.

Selling is set to take place at the Karaka Sales Centre from 11am (NZT) on Thursday 20 June.
