Pencarrow Welcome First Foal of the New Season

Pencarrow Stud Welcome First Foal of the New Season

Three decades of high-class racehorses, exceptional broodmares and sale-topping yearlings have firmly established Pencarrow Stud as one of New Zealand’s most esteemed thoroughbred nurseries, and the latest crop of new foals are starting to arrive for the 2023 breeding season.

Sir Peter Vela and his late brother Philip have bred and raced fillies on the world thoroughbred stage for more than 30 years, and their blue-and-white hooped colours have become synonymous with quality bloodlines and elite racetrack performance.

The Velas were New Zealand Breeders of the Year in 2000 and 2002, and they have bred no fewer than 19 individual Group One winners among a star-studded roll of honour.

From Hong Kong International Cup winner Romanee Conti (NZ) (Sir Tristram) to her legendary daughter Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm), and many more such as Grand Echezeaux (NZ) (Zabeel) and her sire sons Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill) and Burgundy (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) and generations of top-flight performers in New Zealand, Australia and further afield are proof of the Velas’ strength in their select broodmare band of richly bred mares in the fertile paddocks of Pencarrow Stud.

In more recent times, Indomitable (NZ) (Danehill) who is bred on the renowned cross with Sadler’s Wells has etched her place into the stars of Pencarrow broodmare team when she produced the champion miler and emerging sire Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj).

The latest addition to the Pencarrow dynasty and 2023 foal crop came early Tuesday morning, 25 July when NZB Filly of the Year and 1000 Guineas winner Insouciant (NZ) (Keeper) foaled a strong filly by Westbury’s Stud’s emerging sire Tarzino.

“She’s foaled a quality strong looking filly,” commented studmaster Leon Casey.

“I think the mare is a bit underrated for one that has done so well in her own racing career - She’s a strong mare and this cross with Tarzino looks to be a good one.”

Bred and successfully raced in the Pencarrow colours, this is Insouciant’s eleventh foal.

She continues to be an incredible servant to the Pencarrow Stud broodmare band with her most recent offspring, a filly by Dundeel, selling at Karaka 2022 for $200,000 to Go Racing.
