Private Life Showcases Spring Credentials

An impressive performance by Private Life (Written Tycoon) at Warwick Farm on Wednesday has put the classy colt on a path towards bigger and better spring targets for part-owner Sir Peter Vela.

The Chris Waller-trained Private Life made a big impression at the trials as an autumn two-year-old and was sent out as favourite for his raceday debut on May 1, finishing fourth at Canterbury. He took a big step forward and cleared maiden ranks in style in his second start three weeks later at Warwick Farm.

A more mature Private Life stepped out for his three-year-old debut on Wednesday and made it a winning one, despite carrying a testing topweight of 61.5 kilograms.

Private Life and jockey Nash Rawiller took up a comfortable position in third, but then got squeezed back at the home turn and found themselves awkwardly placed in fifth and boxed in along the inside.

But Rawiller angled his mount into the clear four off the fence in the home straight, and Private Life lengthened stride in good style to get up and win by a long neck.

“The team has a big opinion of him,” Rawiller said. “He showed what he was made of today and learned something from it. It was a technical race with no early speed. It was an exciting race to be a part of, and I was lucky to have a horse with a V8 motor.”

Waller’s assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth was more than satisfied with Wednesday’s performance.

“He had to deal with a bit of traffic in running and check off heels,” he said. “He has run a smart time and was tested to do it, but he will strip fitter and come on for it.

“He is a beautifully bred three-year-old colt and will make his presence felt over the spring carnival. He had a big weight there, so we will take the win, and I'm sure Chris will devise a plan from here.”

Private Life’s three-race career has now produced two wins and A$102,500 in stakes for Pencarrow principal Sir Peter Vela and his co-owners Coolmore, Wynaus, Westerberg, Joe Poulin, Lynque, Woppitt Bloodstock, Peachester Lodge, Rockingham Thoroughbreds, Mr K MacLennan, Aristia Park Bloodstock Pty Ltd and Meridian Bloodstock.

Private Life was bred by Arrowfield Pastoral Pty Ltd, Planette Thoroughbred and Belford Productions Pty Ltd. He was bought for A$650,000 as a yearling. He is a son of outstanding stallion Written Tycoon, who was the leading sire of two-year-olds on both sides of the Tasman last season.

The dam of Private Life is Aliyana Tilde (Snitzel), who won four races including the Group Three Epona Stakes (1900m) and also placed in the Group One Australian Oaks (2400m), Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) and Sydney Cup (3200m).

Aliyana Tilde is the dam of four winners from five foals to race, while her unraced daughter Double Deel (Dundeel) has produced the Listed winner and Group One Queensland Oaks (2200m) placegetter Noah ‘N’ A Deel (Maurice).
