Strong Trans-Tasman Demand for Pencarrow Yearlings
04 February 2025
Pencarrow Stud’s yearling class of 2025 was well received by the buying bench during Book 1 at Karaka last week, finding new homes in stables across Australasia.
Pencarrow offered 22 yearlings over the three days of the Book 1 session of NZB’s National Yearling Sales, with Lot 274 the highest-priced member of the Pencarrow draft. The colt by Savabeel out of Scintillula (Galileo) was bought for $375,000 by Hawkesbury trainer Brad Widdup on behalf of owner Mulberry Racing.
“He’s a lovely, athletic colt by the right stallion,” Widdup said. “The mare has done a good job on the same cross, and the colt comes off a great farm as well.
“We looked at the colt three or four times. He has a great temperament, and he probably got even better as the sale went on. I was very happy to get him.”
The Savabeel-Scintillula colt is a full-brother to stakes winner Waikato Girl (NZ) (Savabeel) and the Group Two-placed Butter Chicken (NZ) (Savabeel). He continued a strong run of Karaka sale-ring success for Scintillula, whose previous six yearlings have sold at Karaka for an average price of $534,166.
Prominent New Zealand-based syndicators Go Racing teamed up with Blandford Bloodstock at Karaka this week and paid $260,000 for Lot 199, a colt by first-season sire Sword Of State out of the Savabeel mare Peppino (NZ).
The same combination later went to $260,000 again to secure Lot 281, a colt by Proisir out of Seraphim (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle). Herself a four-race winner including the Listed Marton Cup (2100m), Seraphim is a daughter of the legendary four-time Group One winner Ethereal (NZ) (Rhythm).
“This colt has a really serious pedigree,” Go Racing general manager Matt Allnutt said. “She’s out of a Rip Van Winkle mare that won four races, three of them in succession. The mare was a stakes winner herself and is out of a champion mare that won the Melbourne Cup (3200m).
“The colt is by a champion sire in Proisir, and he’s going to be trained by a champion horseman too in Chris Waller. Chris saw the horse before we bought him. He loved the horse and is rapt that we’ve bought him.”
Pencarrow’s other yearlings in Book 1 of Karaka 2025 were bought by KPW Bloodstock, Patella Bloodstock, Proven Thoroughbreds/Pride Racing, Cambridge Stud, Jamie McCalmont, Mulcaster Bloodstock/Chris Waller Racing, Glenn Old, Pearce Racing, OTI Racing/Phill Cataldo Bloodstock/Pike Racing, and Bjorn Baker Racing/Clarke Bloodstock/Ridgmont.
The team at Pencarrow wish all connections who purchased from our draft the very best of luck, and we look forward to watching their journeys on the racetrack.
