Switzerland Another Coolmore Stud Stakes Superstar for Sir Peter Vela
04 November 2024
For the second time since 2021, Pencarrow principal Sir Peter Vela has shared in a scintillating victory in the stallion-making A$2m Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.
Valuable colt Switzerland (Snitzel) produced a stunning performance in the three-year-old sprint on Saturday, three years after Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) cemented his stallion credentials with a three-length win in the same race. Home Affairs now stands at Coolmore Stud for a service fee of A$82,500.
There was already little doubt around Switzerland’s superstar potential. His six-start career before Saturday had produced four wins, including the Group Two Todman Stakes (1200m) as a two-year-old and a classy last-start win in the Group Two Roman Consul Stakes (1200m).
The Chris Waller-trained colt came up against a typically elite field for Saturday’s Coolmore, including Growing Empire (Zoustar) and Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon), who were last-start third and fourth placegetters in the A$20m Group One The Everest (1200m).
But Switzerland was in a league of his own, charging out of midfield and bursting to the lead 200 metres from the finish. The race was all over from there as Switzerland opened up a winning margin of two and three-quarter lengths over Bellatrix Star (Star Witness), Growing Empire and Lady Of Camelot.
“This is one of the nicest colts I've sat on for a while,” jockey James McDonald said. “He's been promising to do that. I'm absolutely delighted for him, delighted for the connections, and I've got an absolute star colt on my hands.”
Switzerland has now had seven starts for five wins, earning A$1.8m in stakes for Sir Peter Vela and his co-owners Coolmore, Wynaus, Westerberg, Joe Poulin, Lynque, Woppitt Bloodstock, Peachester Lodge, Rockingham Thoroughbreds, Aristia Park Bloodstock and Chris Waller. His value extends well beyond that.
“He's a very well-bred colt,” Waller said. “He's raced by some great racing enthusiasts that have supported me with a stallion fund, and it’s important to win these types of races. It was just an awesome win. It was dominant. It was arrogant.
“He's still a young teenager. He's finding his way. I thought he became a man last start with a dominant win, and the writing was on the wall that a Group One wasn't far away. To win a stallion-making race like this, it's a big deal.”
Switzerland is by four-time champion Australian sire Snitzel and is the first named foal out of the Canadian-bred mare Ms Bad Behaviour (Blame), who won at Grade Three and Listed level and was a Grade Two placegetter. Ms Bad Behaviour is a half-sister to two stakes winners, and her dam Cumulonimble (Stormy Atlantic) was also a multiple black-type winner.
Switzerland was bought by Tom Magnier for A$1.5m from Arrowfield Stud’s draft at the Sydney Easter Yearling Sale last year.
