Tempest (NZ) Caps Pencarrow’s Winning Weekend
04 November 2024
A dominant performance by Tempest (NZ) (Frankel) at Ashburton on Sunday capped an outstanding weekend for Pencarrow principal Sir Peter Vela.
Those same blue and white hooped colours were also carried to victory by Island Life (NZ) (Vadamos) at Tauranga on Saturday, while Sir Peter Vela shares in the ownership of Switzerland (Snitzel), who blew his rivals away by two and three-quarter lengths in the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.
Sunday’s $18,500 Tim Lea (1200m) at Ashburton was the first South Island start for Tempest, who had previously placed in eight of her 13 appearances for Matamata trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott. The six-year-old is now in the Riccarton Park stable of Terri Rae.
Tempest was sent out as a $3.10 favourite, and after settling in midfield and one off the rail for jockey Vinnie Colgan, she swooped around the outside of the field to lodge her bid at the home turn.
Tempest took command in the straight and drew away from her 12 opponents, winning by four and a half lengths.
From 14 career starts, Tempest has now had a win and eight placings. She has earned $37,515 for owner-breeders Sir Peter Vela and Coolmore.
Tempest is by the legendary Frankel, who produced some of the most explosive performances ever seen on a racetrack. He won all of his 14 starts, including 10 at Group One level, and achieved a Timeform rating of 147 and World Thoroughbred Rating of 140.
Frankel has made an enormous impact at stud too, siring 622 winners from 879 runners. His 152 individual stakes winners include 35 at Group One level.
The dam of Tempest is the winning mare Breeze (Sea The Stars), whose dam Kitty Matcham (Rock Of Gibraltar) was a Group Two winner. Kitty Matcham is also a three-quarter-sister to Group One winner Horatio Nelson (Danehill) and half-sister to Group One winner Van Gogh (American Pharoah).
Tempest was the first foal out of Breeze, whose 2021 foal Golden Century (NZ) (Pierro) has placed in his only start to date. A filly foal by Pierro was born in 2023, and she was later served by Circus Maximus.
